REQUIREMENTS CHECKLIST for:
Promotion to Clinical Professor or Adjunct Professor
Time Frame to Approval: 6 to 8 months
(printed on 11/30/2021)
General Considerations:
  • Should currently have an appointment as a Clinical/Adjunct Instructor, Clinical/Adjunct Senior Instructor, Clinical/Adjunct Assistant Professor, or Clinical/Adjunct Associate Professor.
  • Promotions are for moving up in the same track. Choosing a regular track appointment would be a new appointment, not a promotion.
  • The clinical/adjunct tract is typically chosen by candidates who are primarily committed to clinical service and have modest research, professional service and teaching of medical trainees.
  • Clinical is for all candidates, regardless of terminal degree, in every CCLCM academic department, except Biomedical Engineering and Molecular Medicine. Only those in Biomedical Engineering and Molecular Medicine must choose the Adjunct prefix.
  • Must have an established Regional / Midwest reputation (outside of Northeast Ohio or other metropolitan areas where you have worked) and advanced clinical service.
  • Must declare a Primary Area of Excellence as either Professional Service (clinical & administrative), Teaching, or Research.
    • Most candidates will choose Professional Service (clinical & administrative) because their primary focus is clinical care.
    • If you choose Teaching you must have a reputation as an educator and education should be the subject of your publications and presentations. You will NOT be asked to submit a teaching portfolio.
    • If you choose Research, you spend the majority of your time conducting research.
  • Promotions will reflect your documented fulfilment of the qualifications as outlined in the CWRU Appointment and Promotion Standards, please read for more detailed information.
