CLINICAL INSTRUCTOR APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS

Residents and Fellows not on a J-1 Visa can request a

faculty appointment with Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine

 

~All CCLCM faculty appointments are non-tenured and terminate simultaneously

with resignation, retirement, or loss of employment with Cleveland Clinic and/or affiliates.~

Requirements – Must be a resident or fellow who is NOT on a J-1 Visa (this type of work is not within the scope of what is allowed by J-1 Visa holders). Many research fellows, clinical research fellows, and clinical fellows are on a J-1 Visa and should not jeopardize their standing by doing work for CCLCM.

 

Online Application – Complete an online application with Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine (CCLCM) of Case Western Reserve University (CWRU).

         For general information go to our Faculty Affairs website.

         To start an application go to our College Portal and once there click on “Need to create a new account?” if you don’t already have one.

         You will receive an email with a temporary password, use that to login and create a unique password.

o   Once logged in, click on the “Faculty Profile & Appts” tab on the left side.

o   In the middle of the page you will see a link to apply for a new appointment.

o   Pick the “New” application type.

o   Pick the most appropriate CCLCM Dept, usually either Medicine, Radiology, or Surgery.

o   Pick “Clinical service, including clinical research” as your Primary Area of Excellence.

o   Your Nominating Chair will be who wrote your nomination letter. Examples:

§  Other, Richard Drake | Director of Anatomy | CCLCM | Education Institute

§  Other, Michael Forney | Staff Radiologist | Diagnostic Radiology | Imaging Institute

o   Fill in the application, click “Save and Proceed”, upload the needed documents.

o   Once you have uploaded everything, hit “Submit Application” to send your application to Faculty Affairs.

         It can take 1- 2 months for CWRU approval.

         Faculty Affairs will notify you via email once you are approved.

 

 

1.       Nomination Letter received from your CC Program Director or Mentor – A PDF copy of your nomination letter supporting your Clinical Instructor faculty appointment with CCLCM.

a.       The nomination letter should be addressed to Gene H. Barnett, MD, Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs.

 

b.      There is a place in the online application to upload a PDF of this letter.

 

 

2.       Updated CV in any format/template – A copy of your CV which shows your CC training position and the start and end date of the program.

a.       CWRU requires that your CV show your training position and dates.

 

b.      There is a place in the online application to upload your CV or send to Dineen.

They have made significant contributions to the educational program of the college and these contributions have had a direct impact on the medical students in our program. To be appointed as a Clinical Instructor at CCLCM the individual must satisfy the following requirements:

 

1. They must have an appointment with GME at Cleveland Clinic and not hold a J-1 Visa. They must demonstrate expert knowledge in their academic field.

 

2. They are expected to be dedicated to education and demonstrate skills that lead to effective teaching. They should exhibit enthusiasm in being involved in education and developing skills in teaching and assessment.

 

3. They must participate in a minimum of 16 hours of instructional activities. In this case Dr. Name, with the precepting of Drs. Name or Names has completed more than 16 hours of mentored medical student teaching and assessment by completing list courses or type of teaching that has been completed.

 

The requirements for Clinical Instructor have been satisfied and I enthusiastically support this appointment and would be pleased to provide additional information if needed.

a.       Your CV should be up-to-date and include your current role at Cleveland Clinic, and when you started the position.

b.      CV can be in any format, but should be neat, detailed, and have no time gaps.

  1. Sponsor’s Nomination Letter (required)
    1. Request and obtain a letter from a sponsoring CCLCM faculty member or Program Director.
    2. Have your sponsor address letter to Gene H. Barnett, MD, CCLCM Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs.
    3. Ask that the letter be returned to you, so you can upload into online application.
    4. Make sure nomination letter is on letterhead, dated, and signed.
    5. Your letter should be uploaded immediately after receiving it so your application will be submitted in a timely manner.
