REQUIREMENTS CHECKLIST for:
New Appointment & Promotion
Clinical Professor or Adjunct Professor

General Considerations:
  • The clinical track (part-time) is typically chosen by candidates who are primarily committed to clinical service and have modest professional service, teaching, and research accomplishments.
    • Clinical is for all candidates, regardless of terminal degree, in every CCLCM academic department, except Biomedical Engineering and Molecular Medicine.
    • Adjunct prefix is only for those in Biomedical Engineering and Molecular Medicine, but those hired for full-time research should apply in the regular track instead.
    • The application is shorter and no external or trainee referee names are required.
  • Choose the Clinical Track (part-time) if:
    • You are committed to clinical service rather than academic medicine.
    • Your primary location is regional; those at main campus must choose the regular track.
    • You want to promote from Clinical Associate Professor.
    • You are not interested in participating in CWRU governance and committees.
    • You have a full-time appointment at another academic institution that you wish to retain.
  • New! When applying or promoting to Clinical Professor, you must have an established National reputation in your Primary Area of Excellence.
  • This is an entry-level rank that is only for Lerner Research Institute (LRI) mid- to senior career level Research Associates. Talk with your LRI Administrator if you have any questions. --No reputation is required--2
  • MUST declare a Primary Area of Excellence; please choose one:
    • Professional Service (clinical & administrative)
      • Patient care and teaching
      • Professional service obligations (local and national)
    • Teaching
      • Involved in trainee teaching

    2. Must include your current role at Cleveland Clinic, prior employment (professional and academic), education, and training. Between these areas, there should be no unexplained time gaps.
    3. Must include medical license/certificates (if applicable), professional service, committee membership, and teaching activities. Each entry should have start-end dates and each section should be in chronological order.
    4. New! Must have your staff/professional appointments in one section and faculty/academic appointments in a separate section.

    3. By requesting a nomination letter, you agree that you have read the requirements for this rank and know that you have the needed reputation in your Primary Area of Excellence and acceptable contributions in a Secondary Area of Excellence.
    4. Your chair, who writes your nomination letter, may NOT also serve as a referee.
    5. Your nomination letter can only be requested through a link in your online application. Your chair will receive directions on what to include in the letter. This is the information you chair will receive
      • Advocate strongly on your behalf regarding your Primary and Secondary Areas of Excellence.
      • Explain your past, current, and future roles in the department and how you help fulfill department and institutional goals.
      • Discuss what curricular, research, and clinical directions you are pursuing.
    6. The letter is confidential and cannot be shared with you.
    1. Candidate should describe, in up to 2 pages, professional activities (Teaching, Research, and Professional Service), with specifics not usually derived from a CV.
    2. Does NOT need to be on letterhead or signed.
    3. Must include your name and date at the top and number each page.
    4. Any information noted in your Personal Statement must be listed in your CV!
    5. MUST use the following Personal Statement template. Leave the section headings and delete the instructions in red before submitting:
      • Staff Information Details
        ~Describe your current and past staff title/s, institutions, and locations along with start-end dates. (Length: one paragraph)
      • Faculty Information Details
        ~Describe your current and past faculty appointment/s, institutions, and locations along with start-end dates. (Length: one paragraph)
        ~List the Primary Area of Excellence you have chosen, and the required reputation for the CCLCM rank for which you are applying.
      • Reputation Achievements
        ~In paragraph/s, describe what you have achieved in your Primary Area of Excellence that shows you have reached a minimum for the required reputation. (Paragraph Format)
        ~First CCLCM appointment: ONLY include achievements AFTER your post-grad training.
        ~Promotion: ONLY include achievements since your last CCLCM faculty appointment because only these will be counted. Your CV should include your entire career.
        ~Note achievements in these areas from your CV that pertains to your Primary Area of Excellence: Professional Services, Committee Service, Invited Lectures, Trainees/Mentees, Teaching Administration, Teaching Activities, Research Grants, and Publications.
      • Achievements in 2 Other Areas of Excellence
        ~Describe the other achievements you have in the remaining two areas of excellence.
        ~Teaching activities are important and should always be included regardless of your area of excellence. (Paragraph format)
      • Summary
        ~Summarize the faculty rank you are applying for and how you have achieved the required reputation.
        ~Thank the committee for reviewing your application.
    1. Referee letters and the names of those who provide them are confidential and cannot be disclosed.
    2. CCLCM Faculty Affairs Office will solicit the referee letters, and NOT the candidate.
      • If a referee contacts you during the application process, please let them know that all questions must be referred to [email protected].
      • Letters will be solicited AFTER your application is submitted and AFTER the Faculty Affairs team has reviewed and determined that your documents have met the necessary requirements
    3. Your CV and possibly Personal Statement will be provided to some referees.
    4. Colleague referees (input 10 names, 4 names from outside of CWRU/CCLCM is preferred)
      1. Of the 10 names submitted, a minimum of 4 names must be from outside institutions and cannot be from Cleveland Clinic, any CWRU affiliate, or Northeast Ohio.
      2. Input at least 6 names from Cleveland Clinic, any CWRU affiliate, or any other location or institution.
      3. Must be current or former colleagues or supervisors.
      4. Cannot be your nominating chair.
      5. It is preferable, but not required, that colleague referees have an academic appointment and are in a position to evaluate you at your current level.
      6. Minimum of 5 acceptable colleague letters are needed to move your application forward.
        • At least 2 of the letters must be from outside institutions.
        • If more than the minimum amount of letters are received, they will be included with your application.
    1. You must SUBMIT your application in our College Portal so CCLCM Faculty Affairs can begin processing it.
    2. Applications are processed in the order received and high volume may delay processing
    3. Your application will be reviewed, and Faculty Affairs will contact you if any documents need to be updated.
    4. After your application review is complete, Faculty Affairs will then email your referees.
