Case 1:

A 25-year-old woman presents with acute pelvic pain. A pregnancy test was positive. She was taken to surgery [virtual slide of ectopic pregnancy]

  1. Can you identify the fallopian tube, placental villi and developing embryo?
  2. What was measured in the pregnancy test?

Case 2:

A 26-year-old female delivers a 7 lb 6 oz male infant at 36 weeks of gestational age after premature rupture of membranes. The baby spikes a temperature shortly after birth. Examination of the placenta provides a clue to the problem. [normal extraplacental membranes] [this baby's extraplacental membranes]

  1. Identify amnion and chorion in the normal membrane section.
  2. What is abnormal in the baby's membranes? What is the most likely source of the problem?
