Case 1:

Review: Normal adrenal gland histology [normal adrenal gland]

  1. Be able to identify the following structures: capsule, zona glomerulosa, zona fasciculata, zona reticularis, medulla.
  2. What does each of the layers secrete?

Case 2:

A 50-year-old female presents with central obesity, “moon facies”, skin striae and hypertension.

  1. Which zona of the adrenal gland would you expect the pathology to be in? What kind of pathologies might explain the clinical presentation?
  2. Describe the gross features of the lesion [gross appearance]. Does the lesion appear to be benign or malignant based on the gross appearance? How is this lesion different? [gross appearance]
  3. Describe the microscopic features of the lesion. [microscopic appearance]. Does the lesion appear benign or malignant?

Case 3:

An 8-year-old presented with the following pathology [microscopic appearance]

  1. What is your diagnosis?
  2. What is the likely clinical presentation?
  3. What is the etiology?

Case 4:

A 40-year-old male presents with headache, tremors, excessive perspiration, and nervousness. An adrenal mass was discovered and excised.

  1. Describe the gross features of the lesion? [gross appearance] What is the most likely diagnosis given the presentation and gross appearance?
  2. What are the characteristic microscopic features of the lesion? [tumor]
  3. What familial syndromes is this lesion associated with?

Case 5:

Review: normal pituitary gland histology [normal pituitary]

  1. Be able to identify the adenohypophysis and the neurohypophysis.
  2. What does each of these areas secrete?

Case 6:

Your neighbor’s wife comes to you concerned that there is something wrong with her husband. You take a more careful look at him [photo of husband] and wonder if he doesn’t have a pituitary problem.

  1. What problem do you think he might have?
  2. Tissue is obtained from the pituitary gland [tumor]. How does this tissue differ from the appearance of the normal gland? What is your diagnosis?
