Case 1:
Review: Normal adrenal gland histology [normal adrenal gland]
- Be able to identify the following structures: capsule, zona glomerulosa, zona fasciculata, zona reticularis, medulla.
- What does each of the layers secrete?
Case 2:
A 50-year-old female presents with central obesity, “moon facies”, skin striae and hypertension.
- Which zona of the adrenal gland would you expect the pathology to be in? What kind of pathologies might explain the clinical presentation?
- Describe the gross features of the lesion [gross appearance]. Does the lesion appear to be benign or malignant based on the gross appearance? How is this lesion different? [gross appearance]
- Describe the microscopic features of the lesion. [microscopic appearance]. Does the lesion appear benign or malignant?
Case 3:
An 8-year-old presented with the following pathology [microscopic appearance]
- What is your diagnosis?
- What is the likely clinical presentation?
- What is the etiology?
Case 4:
A 40-year-old male presents with headache, tremors, excessive perspiration, and nervousness. An adrenal mass was discovered and excised.
- Describe the gross features of the lesion? [gross appearance] What is the most likely diagnosis given the presentation and gross appearance?
- What are the characteristic microscopic features of the lesion? [tumor]
- What familial syndromes is this lesion associated with?
Case 5:
Review: normal pituitary gland histology [normal pituitary]
- Be able to identify the adenohypophysis and the neurohypophysis.
- What does each of these areas secrete?
Case 6:
Your neighbor’s wife comes to you concerned that there is something wrong with her husband. You take a more careful look at him [photo of husband] and wonder if he doesn’t have a pituitary problem.
- What problem do you think he might have?
- Tissue is obtained from the pituitary gland [tumor]. How does this tissue differ from the appearance of the normal gland? What is your diagnosis?
